capturing creative juices

It is generally the goal of nonprofit organizations, which service at-risk communities, to make a difference by influencing positive change. TeCo Theatrical Productions, Inc. is one such organization that has not only fulfilled that purpose, but has surpassed that general objective. Teresa Wash, the founder and passionate spirit leading this dynamic group, is a tireless child advocate, engaging at-risk youth in self-development exercises that instill critical thinking, conflict resolution processes and decision-making skills, while simultaneously promoting an appreciation for the arts and enlarging their worldview. "Being closed-minded and sheltered prohibits growth," Wash states, commenting on the importance of exposing at-risk communities to diverse art forms.

A talented and popular playwright, hailing from Albany, GA, Wash managed to accomplish the enormous task of sustaining TeCo, now approaching its tenth anniversary, while continuing to write and produce plays that have sold out to audiences across the country. Making Dallas her home in 2000 and coping with typical funding challenges, and a reconstruction of the organization formerly operating in Atlanta, Wash managed to regroup successfully in a new city, secure valuable funding allies and implement programs that educate and empower. “My favorite aspect of TeCo is working with the after school programs.  The children served are greatly impacted, and it’s been proven that they take those positive experiences with them, for the rest of their lives.’ she says.

Reflected in a plaque that was presented to her by the young ladies of St. Philip’s Community Center in South Dallas, Wash shared with us the sentiments of the children she serves. The inscription reads, “To Mrs. TeCo, This is just a note to say we love what you are doing for us in every single way. By us, we mean the children, and that is definitely who we are. You should know that when we see you, we are looking at a star. Not because you are on TV or sometimes make the news, but because helping us learn creatively is truly what you choose. We appreciate your efforts. It must be hard work. We understand. Let us know what we can do. We will help you anyway we can. Your ideas are great and your plays are the bomb. Oh by the way, your son is so cute. We can tell you are a very good Mom. Thank you so much for the entertainment and thank you for the shows. They are not only fun to watch, but they also help us grow. You are an inspiration to us in all that you do. Please believe us when we say, we will always remember you!” Now that is inspirational! Teresa Wash is the wife and soul mate of famed promoter Al Wash, of ALW Entertainment, a devoted mother to the couple’s three-year old son, Albert, and successful author of over 25 plays. Summarizing the sentiments of those touched by this phenomenal woman--- She is unforgettable! ~
